Albuquerque, New Mexico, then Grand Canyon, Arizona

Went to picnic ground to cook breakfast. Then I went up to the Indian Festival. It wasn't much. I was very hot. Bought several sodas. Saw the church and several dances. Went up on the adobe huts via ladders to watch.

Saw the Kivas and the dances. They all looked the same. There were about 300 dancers. About 8 Medicine men painted black with white heads with corn leaves sticking out. Wore turtle shell bells.

About 150 men and boys wearing white “shirts“ & silver jingly bells & pine boughs stuck in their belts and hands. Wore white boots & were painted light brown.

About 150 girls dressed in black skirts & pine boughs and blue & white mantillas on their heads with feathers on them.

And about 200 singers dressed in flashy dress clothes with 1 drummer.

It was all rather colorful.

I left the Festival about 4 or five o'clock. I headed for the Grand Canyon. Along the way I bought some Pepsi and rolls to eat for supper as I would be driving for a long time. The radio stopped working. I sang to myself to stay awake. Also drank Pepsi. That stuff really does wonders.

The G.C. was ages away. I got to Williams again and headed up Route 64 for the Canyon. Passed a Natl Forest camp but didn't like it so I went on. Late that night I pulled the Volks off onto a bed of pine leaves.

The sky was cloudy and it had been intermittently raining so I put the plastic both under and over the sleeping bag. I secured it there with rocks and then went to sleep. Slept well, too.

While I didn't mention it in the journal, I know I went to Meteor Crater on this segment of the trip. It was probably a relatively short stop.
