Lassen Volcanic National Park, California, Summit Lakes Campground

Went to go on hike up to Cinder Cone after I woke up too late to go on all day hike. Traveled over there by car up a dirt road. Very bumpy. About halfway up there was a Natl Forest Camp. Left the car there and started hitch hiking. Thought I'd be picked up right away. Wrong.

Finally got picked up and taken to Butte Lake - starting point of the trail. Was all small shifty rocks - cinders. Don't know how the trees grew in it. It ran right alongside a lava flow. Was really something.

Then went up to Cinder Cone - 35 degree slope. Went back 1 step for every two steps taken. View from top was beautiful - painted sand dunes made out of cinders with broken, cracked, black lava flow beside it. There was a very deep, sloped crater at top. Then I went back through more cinders which kept getting into my worn out shoes and back along the trail.

Tried hitch hiking back but no one picked me up. Walked all the way to campsite. Then drove back and made supper. Was tired. Went to bed after supper.
