Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
Pancakes with syrup for breakfast - yummy. Sat in camp. Kept going to the store and snack bar and visiting those N.Y.'ers. I don't seem to be too interested in playing the guitar. Its alternately hot and cold as clouds pass by.
Wrote the journal up till this point. Put up sign on bulletin board - if 3 groovy guys need a place to stay & camp is full, come to M8. 3 cool guys from New York did. They hassled about everything & were rather disorganized. They set up a tarp as a tent (which was all they needed). The other two cooked a can of something.
Afterwards I headed down toward the Amphitheater. It started raining so I turned back, snatched my rain coat and took off again. I stopped at the store. As I was sitting there, the bus pulled up and the kids started jumping out. They couldn't cook because of the light rain!
They all ran into the delicatessen to eat. The girls in there were really harried and angry at them. I went in and started talking to some of them. A little while before the group came to the G.C. franks were 10 cents and rolls were 20 cents extra. One of the kids was charged 30 cents for the frank and roll he bought. So he went into the store, bought some packages of rolls and started passing them out. After that 10 cent hot dogs were canceled! Some of the counter girls were angry at the group for that.
Afterwards I went back to camp, fixed the tarp so it would shed rain, and went back to them. I watched (socializing with the girls) them play football against some Staten Island Boy Scouts and later sang songs to guitar accompaniment and later still talked to one girl near a small fire they kept trying to keep going and watched as some of the kids got drunk. They fooled around a lot in those tents too.
As I was walking back to camp I heard 3 guys whistling. I stopped just to see what it was all about. It was the three guys from camp. They were lost after wandering around the camp. We all went back to camp. They simply couldn't figure out where they had been. We talked a while, then went to sleep.
